I grew up in Indiana, fishing the local lakes, rivers,
and ponds with my dad. On our family vacations
to Florida, I discovered at an early age my love for
saltwater fishing. The fish were bigger, faster,
stronger, and I just knew that someday I would get
to enjoy the saltwater a lot more often. In my
early twenties I picked up fly fishing and moved to
Breckenridge, Colorado for a few years, fishing
the local “gold medal” rivers for wild rainbows,
browns, cutthroats, and brookies.

In 2002 I moved to San Diego both for the fishing and the booming biotech market.
On my first sport boat trip in San Diego, a 3/4 day trip fishing La Jolla, I saw guys on little
plastic boats fishing the same waters I was paying to fish from a boat. Two weeks later I
bought my first kayak and began fishing the Cardiff kelp and La Jolla religiously. I couldn’t
believe the quality and variety of inshore fish that could be caught from such an
inexpensive and simple, yet very effective fishing platform.
My favorite local species to fish for are yellowtail and White Sea bass, although anything
that bites is fun to me. Whether it’s La Jolla, San Clemente Island, or the East Cape, just
being on the water, senses heightened, looking for that spot of nervous water, fleeing
baitfish, or that lone tern telegraphing the movements of a large game fish is what keeps
me coming back for more.

32 lb. yellowtail, 44 lb. white sea bass, 110 lb. (estimated) striped marlin, 130 lb.
(estimated) striped marlin, 30 lb. humboldt squid, 10 lb. calico bass.

- Winner of LJKF Steve Moyer Memorial Tournament 2003 (20 lb. Yellowtail)
- Top 7 finisher LJKF Steve Moyer Memorial Tournament 2005 (22lb yellowtail)
- Caught two striped marlin from the kayak on back-to-back days at Hotel Punta
Colorada in October 2005.
