I started seriously fishing about 6 years ago
while living in NY. I fished the party boats for a
couple of years but found the expense and the
crowded fishing conditions to be frustrating. I
came across an article about kayak fishing and
was immediately intrigued. I started out with a
two man inflatable contraption that a friend and I
would use to fish for striped bass and fluke in
the bays of the south shore of Long Island.
About 2 years ago I got my eXtreme so I could
get out solo.
I moved to San Diego a year and a half ago in
no small part due to the incredible kayak fishing
opportunities and some excellent professional
opportunities for a biomedical researcher like
myself. I started fishing La Jolla from my first
week here and have not looked back. It took me
a month to get my first yellowtail and after that I
was hopelessly addicted. I spent as much time
as I could in the company of the serious guys
out there and learned a great deal in a short
time due to the openness and knowledge of my
fellow kayak anglers, many of whom are now
friends and teammates.
I find that kayak fishing is a great way to escape
the lab and many good ideas come to me while
I’m paddling or drifting alone. It’s also good
mental exercise regardless, as there is always
something new to learn out there. My favorite
fish to catch is by far yellowtail, though white sea
bass are a close second. But for me, the
catching is a bonus, I really just enjoy all the
elements that go into the fishing and the feeling
of freedom that comes with the kayak. I fished
close to 200 times last year.

Recent fishing accomplishments include: 3rd place 2005 West Coast Whoppers. Biggest
halibut of the contest, believed to be 2nd largest from a kayak. Best fish: 37 lb yellowtail,
43 lb white sea bass, 48 lb halibut. Caught over 20 yellowtail over 15 lbs last year.
