I caught my first fish at the age of 4. It was a sunfish caught from the dock of a lake cabin we
were renting. I loved to watch that bobber go under as a kid. Most of my early fishing was
done in the lakes of Minnesota. My dad definely contributed to my love of the outdoors.
Along with my wife and kids, he is one of my favorite people to spend the day with, fishing. I
moved to California in 1987 and initially was drawn to the familiarity of the fresh water lakes. I
had actually lived here several years before I discovered that big blue saltwater fishing hole
just down the road.
I started out fishing from the sportboats, locally, the islands and overnight tuna expeditions.
My first boat was a 12 footer with a 6 horse outboard and yes it did see the ocean. I hooked
a yellowtail a mile off crysal pier and realized that day the reward of being your own skipper.
Next boat was a 16 footer that caught alot of fish, finally bought a 22 footer for chasing fish
offshore. Around this time I bought my first kayak and started to fish it more and more,
leaving the skiff in the driveway. The ease and simplicity of grabbing the kayak and gear and
going was too much to resist, not to mention the lack of money needed to find adventure.
To pick my best day on the water would be near impssible, there have been way too many
perfect days. Trying to choose between an amazing yellowtail bite with nobody in sight or a
wide open bite surrounded by friends would be difficult. I have been fishing from a kayak for
8 years and have fished from many different makes and models. I have been paddling my
Extreme for a year and a half and think I have found the perfect fishing platform for me. I also
own a Malibu Pro 2 Tandem that takes my wife or son along. I am happy fishing for any fish
that swims, anywhere that I can, but fishing for big fish from my small boat is at the top of my
list.
