Sport fishing has been a tradition in my family for 3
generations. I've been into it for as long as I can
remember. Fly fishing got me first - I took great joy
in making my own flies. I loved casting crank and
spinner lures in wild river streams. The trout kind of
lamb was what I was after. :) Neretva river, city of
Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina was the place.
I came to US with my family in 1994. We spent the
1st year in Detroit MI, and then settled in Boston
MA for 3+ years. Fresh water bass fishing and
occasional hunt for stripers from the shore was my
first fishing exposure on US waters.
In 1998, we made a conscious decision to move to
San Diego. I started going on sport-boats with my
friends right away. I have had 6 yellowtail break my
line… my rod… or my inadequate reel before I
landed my first. Each one broke my heart. Early on
I developed tremendous respect for this fish that
fought like no other.
My friend and I bought a small 16ft runabout boat in
spring 2002. We’ve done a lot of experimenting,
lots of trial and error. Armed with information from
local fishing internet boards, we started going out
at least once a week. This is something we’ve been
doing ever since, year around. We mostly fished
outside of San Diego harbor, Point Loma and La
Jolla kelp.
I quickly realized that “the people that paddle” (kayak fisherman) were catching bigger and better fish than
us boaters. After seeing a kayaker hooked on yellowtail be taken on a sleigh ride all around my boat, I knew I
wanted to do the same thing. The big mean looking kayaker riding that tail happened to be Mike Knott. :)
In May of 2005, I stopped by OEX store. Brian set me up with the fully rigged Malibu eXtreme. I’ve been
trolling my lines ever since. I’ve been fortunate to have had many happy paddles back to the beach.
The immediate contact with the water and the fish below is what really got me hooked on kayak fishing. La
Jolla is an awesome place. The amount and the quality of yellowtail, white sea bass and halibut that seems to
live or reside there is fascinating. La Jolla fishing grounds offer a big playground for exercising a number of
fishing techniques. It comes down to your choice of what fish you’d like to target.
There is no better way to feel and enjoy your surroundings than from the kayak. There is no fishing thrill
whose intensity compares to hooking and landing a big fish from the kayak.
All the information readily available on the internet has made it easy for me to quickly learn the ropes of this
amazing sport. A huge credit goes to awesome folks in the kayak fishing community for unselfishly sharing
their knowledge and daily adventures – many of them my teammates today.
In “real” life, I’ve been happily married to my “best on Earth” wife Sanda for almost 14 years. We have a 13
year old boy Dino, our pride and joy. Last 10 years, I’ve been working for big companies providing IT
Consulting and support work. As of recently, I have my own practice - Adi IT Works. (www.adiitworks.com )
